Bach: "To God alone, the glory"

Did you know that Johann Sebastian Bach, recognized around the world as one of the greatest, if not the greatest composer in history, would frequently initial his blank manuscript pages with the marking, "J. J." (Jesu Juva - "Help me, Jesus"), or "I. N. J." (In Nomine Jesu - "In the name of Jesus"). At the manuscript's end, Bach routinely initialed the letters, "S. D. G." (Soli Deo Gloria - "To God alone, the glory").

"To Bach, these were not just trite religious slogans but sincere expressions of personal devotion," says Patrick Kavanaugh, author of SPIRITUAL LIVES OF THE GREAT COMPOSERS.

Did you know that Bach resoundingly echoed the convictions of Martin Luther that music was second only to the Gospel itself? "Music's only purpose should be for the glory of God and the recreation of the human spirit," said Bach.

Did you know that Bach was a devout reader of the Bible, and other religious volumes (including Martin Luther's collected works), inserting marginal notes in his Bible commentary? In one of the composer's favorite passages, 2 Chronicles 5:13-14, Bach exclaimed, "Where there is devotional music, God is always at hand with his gracious presence." At the conclusion of 1 Chronicles 25, he notes, "Splendid proof that... music was instituted by the Spirit of God through David."

This and more, including the faith of 19 other musical masters (i.e. Handel, Hayden, Mozart, Beethoven) are surveyed in the aforementioned, SPIRITUAL LIVES OF THE GREAT COMPOSERS by Patrick Kavanaugh.

In April 1971 the Lord saw fit to open our doors to the public. Our beginnings were small and not well funded, but the Lord in His infinite wisdom made it all come together and work. From our small beginning the Lord prospered us until in 1998 we went over the million dollar mark in sales. We've had a great journey serving God's people with only the very best in Christian literature. We've had the testimony of many to encourage us over the years as they were blessed by the literature that was made available to them.

Over these years we have grown and are now shrinking back from over the million dollar mark, of 1998, to just under half that in 2007. We continue to trust in Him who rose up the store and is in control of all things. What a blessing it is to know that our Sovereign Lord is in full control of all things and the provider of our daily needs. Knowing that all things do work out for good and His glory we need your assistance in petitioning him to make it all work once again. It is for His glory and the benefit of His church that we need your prayers. Please join with us in a time of prayer on Saturday the 3rd of May at 9:00 AM Pacific Coast Time. "Shout to the Lord" on American Idol

The previous night's episode apparently replaced the Lord's name with 'Shepherd' and Jesus is removed entirely in other verses of the song.

The point is that Christ will never be popular to the world and if He is, then those responsible for making Him as such aren't being the ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20) Christians are called to be.

'Shout to the Lord' on American Idol, whether the Lord's name is replaced or not, removed or not, is the fruit of what's been sowed in many of the so-called 'evangelical' churches of today. Symptomatic of a different gospel being preached. A waterdowned gospel sowed in churches who's desire it is to be 'accepted' by the world or 'popular' and 'entertain' rather than preach the Gospel, forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:37-38) though Jesus Christ alone, as He is... HOLY, HOLY, HOLY!

Why? Why will the message of the cross never be 'popular'?
(Matthew 7:13-14, 1 Corinthians 2:14, 1 Corinthians 1:18, John 15:18-21, James 4:4, John 1:12-13, John 3:19-20)

But...

So, who are the 'us'?

"The Secret" vs. Truth

In light of the upcoming event in San Diego ("The Secret to Having Your Best Year Ever", inspired by "The Secret"), I'm posting the following courtesy of brother Abraham.

1) The SECRET
explains that thoughts are the key to the process of the law of attraction.  "if you can think about what you want in your mind, and make that your dominant thought, you will bring it into your life."(byrne 9)   "when you focus your thoughts on something you want, and you hold that focus, you are in that moment summoning what you want with the mightiest power in the universe." (byrne 14)
 
    THE BIBLE SAYS:
Meditate on God's works and mighty deeds, His precepts and ways, His decrees, His wonders, His law and His statutes. (Psalm 77:12, 119:15, 23, 27, 48, 78, 97, 99, 148)

"Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things." (Colossians 3:2)

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your strength and with all your soul and with all your mind."  (Matthew 22:37) (also Luke 10:27; Mark 12:30)

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-

2) The SECRET
"The law of attraction is the law of creation.  Quantum Physicists tell us that the entire Universe emerged from thought!  You create your life through your thoughts and the law of attraction..." (Byrne 15)
 
    THE BIBLE SAYS:
The Universe did not emerge from thought.  Gods word tells us that the universe emerged with God speaking. 

"And God said, 'Let there be light, and there was light.'" (Genesis 1:3

"And God said, 'Let there be an expanse between the waters," (Genesis 1:6)  

In all instances of creation God speaks and it is done. (See all of Genesis Chapter 1)

3) The SECRET:
"...you create your own reality.  That's where your freedom is, that's where all you power is." (Byrne 39)

    THE BIBLE SAYS:
God is the only creator, nothing is created without God, without Jesus Christ.  You do not create events, you do not create life, you do not create the universe. 

"Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." (John 1:3)

"He was in the world, and though the world was made through him , the world did not recognize him." (John 1:10)

"You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being." (Revelation 4:11)

You do not create the circumstances of your life.

"I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things." (Is 45:7)

You do not create events, or determine what will happen or when.

"He determines the course of world events and He changes the times and the seasons; HE removes kings and sets others on the throne, and only He gives wisdom and knowledge." (Daniel 2:21)
 
4) The SECRET:
"Your life will be what you create it as, and no one will stand in judgment of it, now or ever." (Walsch in Byrne 177)

    THE BIBLE SAYS:
The Bible makes it very clear that there will be final judgment for those who have rejected Jesus Christ.

"Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment ..." (Hebrews 9:27)

"For God will bring every deed into judgment , including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil."
(Ecclesiastes 12:14)
 
5) The SECRET:
"There is no blackboard in the sky on which God has written your purpose, your mission in life." (Walsch in Byrne 177)
 
    THE BIBLE SAYS:
God does have a planned purpose for each and every human being.

"...All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." (Psalm 139:16)

"Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." (Proverbs 19:21)
 
6) The SECRET:
To attract more money to yourself, you are instructed to say and feel the following: "I love money and money loves me."(Byrne 107)
 
    THE BIBLE SAYS:
Regarding Money:

"No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money." (Luke 16:13)

"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil..." (1 Timothy 6:10)

7) The SECRET:
"Many of us were taught to put ourselves last...You must change that thinking." (Byrne 119)
 
    THE BIBLE SAYS:
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better and regard them more highly than yourselves." (Philippians 2:3-4)

"Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, 'If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.'" (Mark 9:35)
 
Whoever desires to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever desires to be first among you must be slave of all.
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Mark 10)

The Secret is nothing more than Name It & Claim It, Positive-Confession, Blab it & Grab it, Prosperity Theology (without God and the Bible), built on a foundation of New Age self-deification.  In other words, the book is just another version of what some TV preachers have taught for decades, namely, if you will sustain the right thoughts, words, and feelings, you will receive whatever you want. But The Secret adds this important twist: your thoughts can bring anything into your life because you are god. (The Author is Rhonda Byrne)
 
You are God in a physical body. You are Spirit in the flesh. You are Eternal Life expressing itself as You. You are a cosmic being. You are all power. You are all wisdom. You are all intelligence. You are perfection. You are magnificence. You are the creator, and you are creating the creation of You on this planet (p. 164).

If that weren't blasphemous enough, the book also says to readers:

The earth turns on its orbit for You. The oceans ebb and flow for You. The birds sing for You. The sun rises and it sets for You. The stars come out for You. Every beautiful thing you see, every wondrous thing you experience, is all there for You. Take a look around. None of it can exist, without You. No matter who you thought you were, now you know the Truth of Who You Really Are. You are the master of the Universe. You are the heir to the kingdom. You are the perfection of Life. And now you know The Secret (p. 183).

This would be beautiful if it were addressed to the God of Heaven.  But Byrne claims this is what we should say to the person in the mirror......... it is the heresy of heresies.

"The Secret" is nothing less than Satan's original lie in the Garden of Eden, "You will be like God" (Gen. 3:5)

It is no exaggeration to say that this book implicitly (and sometimes explicitly) denies virtually every major doctrine in the Bible.

For starters, the authority of Scripture is undermined in The Secret, because the Bible apparently has value only insofar as it (according to Byrne) teaches The Secret.

According to Byrne, the Bible is neither unique nor supremely authoritative, for Byrne maintains that the holy book of every religious tradition contains The Secret.  Thus Byrne's teaching is eclectic , that is, she believes that all religions and their scriptures are equally valid in their authority and basically teach the same thing. Does any more need to be said?????

There's no mention of sin in The Secret.  The cause of all the problems in the world and in our individual lives is merely bad thinking, specifically the failure to recognize and appropriately use the law of attraction.  Therefore the solution to everything lies within us.  And that, of course, eliminates the need for a Savior, a Substitute, or a Sacrifice.  The cross and resurrection of Jesus become irrelevant .

The Secret focuses our hope selfward and not Godward.  It is all about self-empowerment, self-fulfillment, and getting whatever we want. But Jesus warned, "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?" (Matthew 16:26).  The Secret disregards the fact that God has a Law and we have broken it (James 2:10).  What Byrne fails to realize about her law of attraction is that our sinful hearts deceive us (Jeremiah 17:9) and attract not only more sin and guilt, but ultimately, the wrath of God.

However, God in His amazing mercy sent His Son to bear this wrath as a Substitute for all who will repent of their wicked, sinfulness and selfishness and believe on Him.   And "through the true knowledge of Him"— not Rhonda Byrne's book—"His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness" (2 Peter 1:3).

Dear, dear friends, "The Secret to everything" is God Himself.  And GOD, has been revealed to us by Grace in Jesus Christ, "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3).  God has freely told us in the Bible everything we need to know about discovering the unlimited "treasures of wisdom and knowledge" are found in Christ.  And He remains an unknown Secret only to those who will not seek Him diligently there.

Next, we will look at "what saith the Scriptures" regarding pastors, teachers and people who associate with this false, satanic teaching, and I will pose my question to you.

Tithing to Satan II: Family Tools and Resources

Want to know the content of the films in release before exposing yourself and your family to them?

For instance, I was going to see "3:10 to Yuma" last weekend with family and some friends. After spending a couple of minutes researching the film, we're not, because of the blasphemy (thanks to hollywoodandgod.com).

If your mother's name was used as a curse word in a movie, would you pay to see it?
We love our Lord more than our family, yet compromise to pay people to curse His precious and holy name?

And what about other morally questionable factors such as sexual content?

Here are some sites that you can trust to do the research for you.

1)  Hollywoodandgod.com
A ministry of Ray Comfort including a partial list of frequently updated contemporary movies that contain blasphemy and a link to the producers that you may e-mail/write/call. Send Hollywood a personal message. Email them and say “Your movie contains blasphemy. Don’t look for my money at the box office.”

2)  Movieguide.org
Every four weeks MOVIEGUIDE® publishes at least 20 reviews of current movies. They gear the ratings to parents with children but also provide information for discerning adult viewers.

3)  Clearplay.com
YWBD member, J. Dyer (campus law enforcement), recommends ClearPlay. He says, "It is the best filter I have found to date, and it makes movie watching a little safer.  Curse-free was good for language, but ClearPlay cuts out much of the other objectionable material."

J. Dyer continues, "... but I have to say their customer service is not that great.  The filters are very good on most movies I have watched, but on a few movies they  haven’t worked as they should have.  I have sent two emails to ClearPlay asking for information with no response.  Talking to them was not much better.  They do not define their filter categories, so at this point you have to experiment to see what is filtered at a particular setting.  Since I can’t completely trust their filters, I have to “test” each movie before I will show it to the family. Having said all that, it is still the best filter I have used.  I recommend it with the above caveats."

4)  Screenit.com
Also recommended by J. Dyer. He says, "They are very thorough in describing objectionable material in films." All content on Screenit.com requires a membership fee.

Petition to Stop Funding Abortion

The following is an email from brother Anthony.

I wanted to bring to your attention a court case that may have major
ramifications for the unborn of our country.  Please read the following,
as provided by my wife, and check out the link below.  Just a month ago
someone we know went to planned parenthood to have an abortion, but by
the grace of God she did not go through with it. 

As John Piper says, may we one day come to a place where we treat
abortion with even more contempt than we do slavery.

There is a court case coming up in 6 days that is very important in
regards to the sanctity of life in America.  It involves a plan to
de-fund the federal monetary support of Planned Parenthood, an
organization that provides and defends abortion in America.  Attached is

The Gospel, Criminal?

It is about to become a hate crime to preach ALL truths of the Word of God.

The federal "hate crimes" legislation - H.R. 1592 and S. 1105 - appears on a fast track to passage unless you act today. It is a threat to your freedom of speech and your freedom of religion.

The proposed law could make it a crime to preach on Romans Chapter 1 or I Corinthians Chapter 6.  Or even to discuss them in a Sunday School class.

Tithing to Satan

We know since the fall of humanity's corporate representative in Adam, that Satan, the prince and power of the air, has the deed, as it were, to the earth, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.[1] Therefore, we also know that Satan uses the world system to advance his cause of defying our Creator at every turn, usurping His authority through those who aren't the children of God (blinding their minds).[2]
 
There is a battle going on as we speak for the soul of Hollywood. In one camp are those responding to the sensitivities of Americans who hold to the traditional Judeo-Christian values this nation was founded upon. Hollywood took notice of this most recently with the amazing success of The Passion of the Christ. They realized there was a huge market out there they've neglected for years. People who hold to and aim to raise their families under such values. Also, fearing they might offend this market or scare them away from buying tickets, they began reducing the use of curse words and clamped down on the amount of sexual content. They even went so far as throwing in references to God, Jesus, and made crucifixes as common as water bottles. No matter how you cut it, the motive is financial, not genuine with the small exception being those films actually produced by Christians such as Walden Media.[3] Financial motives or not, this is a good thing.
 
In the other camp are those who are as bold in pushing their secular progressive agenda as Christians should be in winning souls.[4] This camp has enough money for multiple lifetimes and even if their financial security were threatened, would rather die poor, fighting those who hold to traditional family values than die rich and see their secular agenda defeated. Michael Bay's film, Transformers, is the latest example. Mark Moring, Online Editor/Music & Film for Christianity Today at the Movies says,
"...buckets of bad language? A female character whose main job seems to be not so much saving the world, but putting impure thoughts into the minds of male viewers? And Shia LaBeouf with a porn and possible masturbation problem? Do these elements really add anything to the story? It's aggravating enough for me, as the father of 16- and 14-year-old boys. My sons and I were really looking forward to seeing Transformers, but I've made the unpopular decision (at least to them) of just saying no to this movie. And I'm angry about it, because there was no reason for Michael Bay to include these things in the movie. But I'm even more angry because this is a film that will attract thousands of boys half the age of my sons—7- and 8-year-olds, big fans of the Transformers toys, dying to see this movie. And their parents—either clueless or careless—will take them."

So… I wonder. Am I honoring God by indiscriminately paying to watch movies in theaters or rent on DVD without doing my due diligence as to the content of those films?
 
Should I not consider, with as much wisdom and diligence, that for which I spend my money as much as I do with the organization or amassing of it?
 
Does being a good steward of my finances stop at the wise organization or amassing of them?
 
Movies like the Transformers shape the cultural landscape. Paying to view such films just so I can be entertained for 90 minutes is selfish, it approves AND most significantly, funds the very world system that we, by God's grace, have been chosen to be delivered from and deliver others from. It defeats our own purpose by contributing to the very thing we pray and work to fight daily so that many may be turned from the power of Satan to the power of God.[5]
 
When I take an honest inventory on what I spend my money on, am I contributing to the coffers of Satan and his cause or that of my Lord (tithing to the church, charitable giving, etc.)?
 
The goal isn't to make a negative financial impact on Hollywood, it's to honor Christ. If it makes an impact financially, so be it. To some degree, Hollywood has already felt the financial backlash for thumbing their nose at the values of the traditional American family. As has been the case, a segment of the Hollywood powers that be will respond to it, some won't. Either way, we're called to be good stewards of all the we have, knowing, nothing that we have is our own but a gift, given to us from the Father of lights who sustains all things, even our being and that we, the elect, were bought at a very precious price.[6]
 
Where do we draw the line? It's a matter of conviction. What does God's Word say? What does it mean to be a disciple of Christ?
 
Does what I've written sound strange to you, silly or even extreme? My friend, this may be the time to consider a very serious question?
 
If you were to die tonight, are you certain you would go to heaven?
Suppose that you were to die today and stand before God, and He were to say to you, "Why should I let you into my Heaven?" What would you say?
